Early Access MMOs You Can Play In 2025

The Future of MMOs

The new fad these days is to release your MMO in early access and hope that it doesn’t die before you get to publish.

In this article, we will be looking at MMOs that are available to play in 2025 and if they are actually worth the time and money.

You can find my full video here which goes into a bit more detail

The Quinfall

The Quinfall is an open world sandbox like MMORPG which has been in development since 2021 by Vawraek Technology, a developer based in Turkey.

The game promised to be everything you could want in a MMO whilst utilizing the latest and greatest UE5 technology. However upon trying the game, it feels more like a Black Desert Online clone… a really really bad one.

You can play the Quinfall on steam for as little as 16.75… but even that seems like too much. Avoid at all costs.

Pax Dei

Pax Dei had a lot of hype around it when it was first announced. A UE5 sandbox MMO with base building and open world PVP focusing on the social side of gaming, what is there not to love?

Unfortunately things started to unravel when they started to talk more about the game. In particular their approach to monetization raised a few concerns. Box price, plus sub price plus in game store… like ok there, slow down we haven’t even seen enough of the game yet for you to start demanding all of this.

The game was then rushed through two alpha tests and then finally put into steam for a whopping £40 as a minimum buy in, with other options to purchase at a higher price.

But long story short, the game is no where near complete and it feels very bare bones and clearly rushed to early access so they can make a quick buck or two. Personally, I would avoid until there is actually some sort of game loop here.

Corepunk

I had the opportunity to play Corepunk a few times during their Alpha testing and it is indeed now in early access through their own website. So what is Corepunk you might be wondering, well to quote the devs directly “It seamlessly blends elements of MMORPGs, MOBAs, and ARPGs.”

It’s a top down MMO where you can to explore a Corepunk dystopian world, with plenty of NPCs to interact with along with enemies in every corner. This game is NOT solo friendly, it does encourage you to play with other players, which is ironic as it also has PVP zones, where you will find people adventuring solo.

Interestingly enough the game uses AI text to speech voices for their dialogue which sounds really good at times but also quite bad at others. The questing wasn’t too bad, but lets be real here, it’s hard to get away from those basic fetch quests that you see in EVERY MMO, but for some reason they seemed a little bit more difficult to do in Corepunk. I just never seemed to be able to find the object i needed.

I liked the idea and i feel like it would be fun to play with friends, but it still needs a lot of work. Despite being early access it does have a premium price of £28.99. If you like this style of game, give it a go!

Star Citizen

Does a Massively Multiplayer Online game that has been in Alpha for over 10 years count as early access? Well, it’s hard to say but the product certainly isn’t finished, just like an early access title…

The buy in price to play Star Citizen is $48, which might seem a lot but believe me, I’ve played more.

The game is fun to play and does have a lot of fleshed out systems, but it does seem very glitchy and buggy which might be why it’s still considered Alpha. You can find my full review here: I Tried to Play Star Citizen 2024 ; Here’s what happened

Personally, I would wait for a free play weekend to see how good the game is, which does happen quite often. But if you are inpatient, I don’t think you will be disappointed…just be warned it might be a rough ride.

Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen

In 2014 Pantheon started its journey as a failed kick starter, but look at it now, 10 years later it’s now on steam in early access. The funding goal was set at $800,000, but the campaign raised only $460,657 from 3,157 backers. Which is still a lot of interest and a lot of funding.

Brad McQuaid, who originally co-founded Everquest, also founded Visionary Realms, the developers behind Pantheon. If you are a fan of the early 2000’s classic MMORPG’s then you will be a fan of this title. The graphics might be modern, but the game play is more akin to the old style of gaming.

There has been a lot of drama, speculation and delay with Pantheon over the years, but it’s good to see it finally on steam and doing so well. If you like your MMOs old-school, then you should enjoy Pantheon Rise of the Fallen.

Project Gorgon

Project Gorgon is an indy MMO developed by husband and wife duo Eric Heimburg and Sandra Powers. Its’ an immersive MMO which sets itself apart with just how immersive it is. On paper, it doesn’t look like much, but there is a lot of depth to this MMO. It has all the feel of a sandbox MMO, by letting you do anything, but at the same time, it’s well thought out and constructed and still pushes you toward the main story quest line.

It’s certainly a MMO I’m enjoying playing and one that i hope to do a full review on. It is available on steam in early access and you can also play the free demo to see if you like before you buy.

Sadly with the passing of Sandra Powers it’s hard to say how this game will be effected long term, as you can tell a lot of love and passion went into creating this title and my condolences go out to Eric and Sandra’s family.  I hope she realized what a amazing community she created with this great title.
